Price Chopper / Market 32
Price Chopper: LED Lighting with controls, RTU fan staging, demand control ventilation
Supermarkets face high energy and operational demands while operating on low margins. This makes grocery stores great candidates for efficiency solutions and Price Chopper/Market 32 offers an ideal example of the energy and cost savings available to clients in the grocery industry.
Like many supermarkets, Price Chopper/Market 32’s outdated systems and long run-hours left them with high utility bills and old equipment. The supermarket chain chose three efficiency measures as part of this project, including LED lighting, fan motors and demand ventilation control in different parts of each store.
Combining conservation measures across five stores into one, comprehensive project, the Mantis Efficiency Solutions team qualified this work for over $2 million in utility incentives, resulting in a low project payback period while also lessening the stores’ overall environmental impact.

The Results
Increased Visibility & Sustainability
As retail environments, grocery stores and supermarkets depend on light levels to sell produce and products. The LED lighting solutions designed for Price Chopper/Market 32 not only decrease energy use in each store, they offer greater control over light levels and a clearer, brighter light to illuminate the aisles. Implementing these LED solutions was sustainable for both the building and the planet. By saving an impressive 5,436,450 kWh annually, the store reduces their energy consumption by the environmental equivalent of taking more than 800 cars off the road annually.
Improved Interior Comfort
A combination of HVAC and mechanical efficiency solutions targeted improvements in the stores’ environments. The Mantis Efficiency Solutions team leveraged evaporator fan motors, RTU controls and other mechanical solutions to provide better control over HVAC systems. These solutions deliver a stronger performance with greatly decreased power demand, ultimately reducing the grocery’s carbon footprint.
Rapid Return on Investment
Our team initiated multiple projects for Price Chopper/Market 32 because of the savings associated with a comprehensive approach to energy efficiency. Individually, any of the implemented solutions would decrease annual energy use and cost for the grocery stores. Together, the efficiency measures are delivering significant annual savings. Combined with competitive utility incentives, this project resulted in a 125% ROI and less than 1 year payback.
