Evaluating a Path to Carbon-Neutral Operations
Challenge
A leading global logistics provider with a large network of warehouses and distribution facilities established an ambitious goal: to achieve carbon-neutral operations by 2050. To turn that vision into reality, the organization needed a deeper understanding of facility energy performance, emissions drivers, and the most impactful opportunities for carbon reduction across its portfolio.
The challenge extended beyond identifying potential projects. Leadership also needed a consistent framework for evaluating opportunities, aligning multiple departments, and prioritizing investments based on both financial performance and sustainability outcomes. Without a clear roadmap, achieving long-term carbon neutrality goals would be difficult to execute at scale.
Solution
To help establish a practical path forward, Mantis Innovation partnered with the global logistics provider to evaluate facilities across 10 locations spanning six U.S. states and Canada.
The engagement followed a structured approach:
- Review existing facility and energy data while addressing critical information gaps.
- Conduct comprehensive ASHRAE Level II energy assessments to identify site-specific opportunities.
- Develop implementation roadmaps that outline projected energy savings, carbon-reduction potential, and investment priorities.
This process enabled stakeholders to evaluate opportunities through a facility performance and energy efficiency lens while establishing a common understanding of how each initiative could contribute to broader sustainability objectives. Projects were prioritized using financial and carbon-reduction metrics, creating a clear roadmap for future implementation.
Results
The assessment transformed a long-term sustainability goal into a prioritized action plan backed by data. The organization gained visibility into carbon-neutral opportunities across its portfolio, helping leadership align decision-making and focus resources on initiatives with the greatest potential impact.
By identifying and prioritizing actionable projects, the global logistics provider established a scalable framework to improve energy efficiency, reduce emissions, and advance toward carbon-neutral operations, while avoiding fragmented or uncoordinated sustainability investments.
Performance Outcomes:
- 9,000 MT CO₂e annual emissions reduction identified.
- 84 measures identified and prioritized across the portfolio.
- 10 locations assessed across the U.S. and Canada.
- 6 states plus Canada included in decarbonization roadmap.
