Two Massachusetts Hospitals

Brighter Hospitals, Lower Costs, Fewer Maintenance Disruptions

Challenge

A leading Massachusetts healthcare network aimed to improve lighting across two hospital campuses while reducing operating costs and supporting sustainability objectives. Existing lighting systems required ongoing maintenance and consumed more energy than necessary, creating an added burden for facility teams supporting critical healthcare environments.

Like many healthcare organizations, the network needed a solution that would enhance the experience of staff and patients without disrupting essential operations. Continuing to rely on aging lighting infrastructure risked higher utility costs, increased maintenance demands, and missed opportunities to improve facility performance. The organization sought a path that would deliver measurable results with minimal disruption.

Solution

Mantis partnered with the healthcare network to develop a practical, results-driven lighting modernization strategy across both hospital locations.

The approach focused on three key steps:
  1. Identify available utility incentives to maximize project value.
  2. Design a comprehensive LED retrofit plan targeting high-impact opportunities.
  3. Manage implementation across both facilities to accelerate savings and improve long-term energy efficiency.

Through the retrofit of more than 8,000 lighting fixtures, the hospitals transitioned to a modern lighting system that improved operational efficiency, reduced future maintenance requirements, and supported sustainability goals.

Results

The lighting upgrade helped the healthcare network avoid the ongoing costs and operational disruptions associated with outdated lighting systems while creating more efficient environments for staff and patients. By reducing maintenance demands, facility teams gained more time to focus on mission-critical activities rather than routine fixture replacement.

At the same time, the project generated substantial financial, energy, and environmental benefits, helping the organization strengthen facility performance while advancing its long-term sustainability objectives.

Performance Outcomes:
  • $325,000 in total annual savings achieved.
  • 1.4-year project payback realized.
  • $262,600 in utility incentives captured.
  • 1,690,000 kWh reduced annually.
  • 1,198 MT CO2e emissions avoided.
