Improving Data Center Efficiency Through Intelligent Lighting Controls
Challenge
A Northeast Colocation Data Center sought to improve energy efficiency, reduce operating costs, and maintain reliable day-to-day operations at its 38,000-square-foot facility. Like many mission-critical environments, the organization needed to modernize aging lighting infrastructure while taking a cost-conscious approach and supporting reliable operations.
The facility's existing lighting system consumed more energy than necessary and lacked the advanced controls needed to optimize performance. Without intervention, the organization faced continued excess energy consumption, higher utility expenses, and missed opportunities to strengthen long-term facility efficiency.
Working alongside the data center team, Mantis Innovation identified a practical, low-risk strategy to reduce energy use and maximize the investment's financial value.
Solution
To improve facility performance, accelerate energy savings, and strengthen project value, Mantis implemented a focused upgrade to lighting and controls.
The strategy included:
- Replacing 147 recessed 2x4 troffers with modern dimmable LED retrofit kits.
- Integrating occupancy and daylight sensors to automatically adjust lighting levels.
- Grouping fixtures and dimming them to IES-recommended light levels to eliminate unnecessary energy use.
The integrated controls increased the project's energy savings by more than 20%, helping the facility capture greater value from the retrofit and operate more efficiently.
Results
The completed project delivered immediate operational and financial benefits. By combining energy-efficient LED technology with intelligent controls and utility incentives, the Northeast Colocation Data Center reduced annual energy consumption and operating costs while achieving a fast return on investment.
The project also supported broader sustainability objectives by lowering the facility's carbon footprint and creating a more efficient operating environment for the future.
Performance Outcomes:
- 230,500 annual kWh reduced
- $34,000 total annual savings achieved
- <1-year project payback realized
- $30,000 incentive funding secured
- 163 MT CO₂ equivalent reduced
