Modernized controls and improved visibility across two mission-critical data centers, with zero operational disruptions.
Challenge
A multinational pharmaceutical company relied on two operational data centers to support critical business functions. In New Jersey, aging building management system (BMS) controls, expired software licenses, end-of-life graphics, failing hardware, and issues with the original airflow management system increased the risk of facility failure. In Southern California, intermittent BMS failures could shut down all computer room air conditioning (CRAC) units, leaving no visibility into the root cause.
With strict blackout periods in November and December and no room for operational disruption, the organization needed to improve facility performance, enhance reliability, and support energy efficiency without disrupting ongoing operations.
Solution
Mantis partnered with the client to modernize controls infrastructure and restore confidence in day-to-day operations through a focused three-step approach:
- Replace failing controls hardware and outdated components.
- Improve system visibility by consolidating critical data and monitoring points.
- Enhance automation, redundancy, and alert capabilities to support predictive maintenance and operational reliability.
In New Jersey, failed hardware was replaced with updated Tridium and Distech controls to maintain oversight of CRAC units and automate backup unit operation. In Southern California, defective sensors were replaced, a JACE machine-to-machine controller was installed to unify system data, and additional power monitoring was integrated to improve visibility into energy performance.
Results
Both projects were completed simultaneously, on schedule, and in compliance with all blackout restrictions, with no impact on operations. The upgraded systems now provide greater visibility, redundancy, temperature stability, automated response capabilities, and improved energy efficiency across both facilities.
Performance Outcomes:
- 0 operational disruptions during system rebuild
- 738 data points monitored for visibility and control
- 18 CRAC units managed in New Jersey
- 30 rack-mount temperature sensors monitored
- 3 Southern California CRAC units integrated
