Massachusetts General Hospital

Advancing Hospital Sustainability Through Large-Scale Energy Efficiency

Challenge

Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), one of the nation’s leading academic medical centers, established ambitious sustainability and energy performance objectives through its Strategic Energy Master Plan. To achieve those goals, the organization needed to reduce energy consumption across a complex portfolio of healthcare facilities while maintaining the reliable, uninterrupted operations essential to patient care.

Like many healthcare organizations, MGH faced the challenge of improving facility performance and reducing environmental impact without compromising occupant comfort, operational efficiency, or clinical environments. Failing to modernize aging systems would have made it more difficult to meet long-term energy and sustainability targets.

Having supported energy-efficiency initiatives across healthcare settings, Mantis worked with the hospital to develop a practical path toward measurable energy savings and sustained performance improvements.

Solution

To help MGH advance the goals of its Strategic Energy Master Plan, Mantis implemented a campus-wide energy-efficiency strategy spanning more than 30 projects across the hospital’s Boston facilities.

The approach followed three clear steps:
  1. Identify high-impact opportunities to improve energy performance across hospital facilities.
  2. Upgrade lighting systems with LED retrofits and controls.
  3. Scale improvements across multiple buildings to maximize long-term efficiency and sustainability outcomes.

Through these projects, MGH modernized critical building systems, reduced energy consumption, and improved overall facility performance while supporting broader environmental objectives.

Results

The completed program helped Massachusetts General Hospital avoid the growing costs and environmental impacts of inefficient energy use while advancing its strategic sustainability goals. By implementing efficiency improvements across dozens of projects, the hospital generated savings, reduced energy demand, and delivered carbon reductions across its facilities.
