Edward Elmhurst Hospital

Transforming Hospital Lighting Into Lasting Energy Savings

Challenge

Edward Elmhurst Hospital sought to reduce energy consumption across its active healthcare environment while minimizing financial impact and avoiding disruption to daily operations. Aging lighting infrastructure created unnecessary energy demand, higher operating costs, and missed opportunities to improve interior spaces.

With thousands of fixtures across the campus, the hospital needed a practical path forward that could reduce costs, improve efficiency, and support long-term sustainability objectives without compromising facility operations. Mantis guided the organization toward a solution designed to deliver measurable energy and cost results while minimizing risk.

Solution

Mantis developed and executed a large-scale lighting modernization strategy to identify high-impact opportunities, replace aging technologies, and improve facility performance.

The approach centered on three key steps:
  1. Identify high-impact opportunities across the hospital's lighting infrastructure.
  2. Replace aging technologies with high-efficiency LED solutions and intelligent controls.
  3. Implement upgrades at scale to maximize energy savings while supporting ongoing hospital operations.

More than 38,000 lighting fixtures were retrofitted or replaced throughout the facility. As part of the initiative, 29,746 fluorescent, metal halide, induction, and high-pressure sodium fixtures were upgraded with high-efficiency LED retrofit kits and new fixtures, with intelligent controls incorporated where appropriate. The program improved energy efficiency, reduced consumption, and enhanced light quality throughout the hospital.

Results

The completed project helped Edward Elmhurst Hospital avoid the ongoing costs and inefficiencies associated with outdated lighting systems, creating a more efficient and visually improved healthcare environment that supports measurable savings and better facility performance.

Beyond substantial energy and cost reductions, the project advanced the hospital's sustainability objectives, lowered its carbon footprint, and delivered a strong financial return. The upgraded lighting environment supports better facility performance while helping the organization control operating expenses and sustain those results over the long term.

Performance Outcomes:
  • $1.7 million total annual savings achieved.
  • 14.75 million kWh reduced annually across the facility.
  • 10,454 MT CO₂e eliminated annually.
  • $267,000 utility incentives captured.
  • 2.8-year project payback achieved.
