Big Y Achieves Over $1.3M in Annual Savings with Multi-State Lighting & Efficiency Upgrades

Client Background

Big Y is a leading regional grocery retailer operating in two states. The company faced mounting challenges as its stores aged, including rising energy costs and concerns about how outdated lighting and mechanical systems were impacting the shopping experience. With compliance, cost control, and customer satisfaction at stake, Big Y needed a strategic partner to deliver results quickly and effectively.

Challenge

Executing a large-scale efficiency project across 26 sites during a year plagued by supply chain disruptions was a significant hurdle. Big Y required a solution that could overcome lead-time issues, consolidate multiple upgrades for maximum incentive capture, and modernize store environments without interrupting daily operations.

Solution

Mantis Innovation developed a comprehensive, multi-state efficiency strategy tailored to Big Y’s needs. Rather than tackling projects individually, we bundled upgrades across multiple locations to accelerate savings and secure substantial utility incentives. The scope included advanced lighting upgrades to improve brightness and color consistency, Tier 3 efficiency measures for critical systems, retrofits for refrigeration case motors, installation of variable frequency drives on rooftop units, and CO₂ controls for smarter environmental management. This proactive approach allowed Big Y to achieve rapid results while minimizing disruption.

Results & Impact

The impact of this initiative was transformative. Big Y realized $1,351,203 in annual savings and secured $4,261,999 in utility incentives. Energy consumption dropped by more than 7.2 million kilowatt-hours, and natural gas usage decreased by 58,034 therms. These improvements translated into a reduction of 5,418 metric tons of CO₂ emissions and a project payback period of just 2.1 years. Beyond the numbers, Big Y gained enhanced remote control capabilities, reduced maintenance burdens, and created a brighter, more inviting shopping environment for customers.
