Eliminate humidity problems in cold storage facilities that impacted energy performance and food safety
The Challenge
The largest private-label cheese manufacturer in the US had problems with humidity management and efficiency at 22 manufacturing locations and distribution centers comprising 3.1M square feet of refrigerated space.
The Solution Mix
First, we set a baseline. Then, we determined the true cause of the problems. What initially appeared to be an insulation issue was actually a combination of air infiltration, HVAC negative pressurization, and thermal transmission through the building envelope. Next, we created a roadmap and identified corrective measures. We then developed budgets, return on investment calculations, and project plans. We engaged decision-makers and developed a comprehensive program that includes engineering design, procurement, project management, and commissioning. Finally, we reported progress by tracking outcomes to validate the solutions.
The Results
- A long-term solution to the problem – 20+ year engineered design life
- Significant energy savings – reduced refrigeration energy load by 20%
- Food safety issues resolved – no reported violations in over 6 years
- Increased operational efficiency – significant reduction in maintenance and repair for both refrigeration equipment and roof leak response
