A team of engineers, with Mantis Innovation's efficiency solution group, was called in by an international, multi-tenant colocation company to help them achieve their goal of being Tier 3+ Compliant in a zColo data center in Atlanta.
Limitations + Issues
- Mechanical systems running due to lack of controls
- Unable to optimize Cooling Towers
- All CRAC units running; unable to sell remaining space
- 3000 Tons of mechanical cooling running for 529 Ton load
Environmental Equivalents
Over time, the environmental impact from this zColo data center project is big. These equivalents reflect their annual kWh savings:
- 356 household electricity use for one year
- 603 cars taken off the road
- 2,319 acres of pine or fir forests storing carbon for one year
- 3,014 conventional cars converted to hybrid
- 6,464 barrels of oil
Project Focus Areas
Instrumentation
Our team installed a BAS System to integrate all power and cooling systems. It included all DCIM capabilities such as temperature sensors in cold aisles.
Mechanical
We installed heat exchangers, automated valves and new pumps. Results included:
- Automatic failover control
- Automatic loop optimization via pressure control
- Reclaimed 1200 Tons of Mechanical Capacity
Airflow Management
- Installation of automated two way valves on CRACs
- Airflow best practices inside the racks, in the floor
- Slab floor overhead air distribution
- BAS with temperature sensors monitoring cold aisle, turning on backup units as load in data center changes
Outcomes from this data center optimization project
- Reduced PUE from 2.1 to 1.5.
- Reclaimed over half of the mechanical capacity of CRAC units, pumps and cooling towers
- The site now has ability to scale to over 200 watts per square foot and be N+1 compliant
- Dynamic, self-healing systems in place for future growth
